JUDGING CRITERIA

Crystal Beverage Awards Wine and Cocktail Lists are those that offer to restaurant, club and hotel customers breadth of wine selection, fair pricing, clarity, information, value, style and affinity with the restaurant’s cuisine and concept.

Breadth of Choice – are the wine selections in a variety of styles, price ranges and familiarity, allowing the widest variety of customers a great dining experience?

Clarity – the wine lists will be judged for friendliness and ease of use by the staff, salespeople and customers alike.

Informative content – wine lists can intimidate and confuse the customer or, in the best examples, educate and assist the customer in selecting wines and combining them with the establishment’s cuisine and signature dishes.

Authentic Style – some wine list competitions might, in certain circumstances, encourage copycat wine lists. One of the aims of this competition is to reward originality and uniqueness.

Wine Quality – the best wine lists reflect the buyer’s keen awareness of quality in well-known and lesser-known wine labels.

Price Value – the pricing should be fair and competitive in the property’s marketplace in comparison to its competitors, and in line with check averages.

Affinity with Food and Concept – the wine selections should reflect an understanding of those wine styles that will show the concept and cuisine of the establishment to best effect.
